MEET YOUR NEIGHBOUR
👋 Allan J. MacDonald & Garry & Barb Newman

This week, we’re tipping our hats to a trio of community champions who’ve gone above and beyond to bring local history to life.

Glengarry County Archivist Allan J. MacDonald recently wrapped up another wildly successful Glengarry Rambles Bus Tour, this time taking curious minds through the rich history of Charlottenburgh township in South Glengarry. Allan poured countless hours into prepping and perfecting the route—driving it at least six times before presenting it over four full tour days across two weekends! His passion for preserving and sharing local stories is truly unmatched.

And of course, every good tour needs a smooth ride - so a big shoutout also goes to Garry and Barb Newman, who generously volunteered their time (and driving skills!) to steer the bus and help boost the fundraising efforts for both the Glengarry Pioneer Museum and the Glengarry, Nor'Westers and Loyalist Museum.

👏 This kind of community spirit is exactly what keeps our local heritage alive and thriving. Thank you, Allan, Garry, and Barb, for your dedication, time, and enthusiasm!

🚌 Can’t wait to hop on the next tour? Mark your calendars: the next Glengarry Rambles historical bus tour is set for the last weekend in September and the first weekend in October. Tickets will be available by mid-August!

THROWBACK CORNER
📸 Honouring the Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry Highlanders

Photo Credits: From the collection of Library and Archives Canada

This week, we’re taking a moment to look back at a powerful moment in our region’s military history - captured in this striking, colourized photo from February 11, 1945.

Pictured are members of the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders, part of the 9th Brigade, 3rd Canadian Infantry Division, as they crossed the water aboard a Buffalo carrier near Mehr, Germany during the Second World War. This image was taken just before one of their most significant operations: Operation Veritable - the campaign to clear the south bank of the Rhine.

The Highlanders entered the battle on the third day, advancing through flooded fields without the aid of artillery support. Their path led them through the hamlet of Donsbruggen and into the larger village of Rindern, which they secured by daylight on the 11th.

This photo, now colourized and shared with permission from Arthur Warfo (France), is a vivid reminder of the bravery, sacrifice, and determination of the local men who served.

PET OF THE WEEK
🦅 A Wild Guest Appearance from Ingleside!

Bald Eagle photographed in Ingleside by Mark Day

Okay, okay… this one might not qualify as a “pet” in the traditional sense - but when a majestic visitor like this shows up in our backyard, how could we not give her the spotlight?

📸 Captured by Mark Day near Ingleside, this incredible bald eagle is believed to be a large female, with an estimated wingspan of about 7 feet. Let that sink in - 7 feet of absolute power and grace perched right here in SD&G!

While we usually highlight adoptable furry friends or beloved household companions, this week we’re tipping our hats (and binoculars) to one of the region’s most impressive wild residents.

Keep your eyes to the sky, especially near the water - you never know when you’ll spot one of these regal raptors soaring overhead.

Big thanks to Mark Day for sharing this amazing sighting and photo! If you’ve got a wildlife moment or pet pic to share, tag us - we’d love to feature it in an upcoming edition of The Scoop!

COMMUNITY WINS
🏆 Cornwall Opens Its Arms to Sandy Lake Evacuees

This week, Cornwall is showing once again what it means to come together in times of need.

In response to the escalating wildfire threat in Northern Ontario, the City of Cornwall is welcoming evacuees from Sandy Lake First Nation. The first group of 155 individuals arrived early Sunday morning, with more expected throughout the week. In total, Cornwall is preparing to host up to 450 evacuees.

At the heart of this compassionate response is a remarkable collaboration between the City of Cornwall, Emergency Management Ontario, the Canadian Red Cross, the Eastern Ontario Health Unit, and the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne - all working in unison to provide safe accommodations, medical support, and culturally-informed care.

“The safety and well-being of evacuees is our top priority,” said Deputy Fire Chief Leighton Woods. “Cornwall has a long history of rallying in moments of need and today is no exception.”

From cozy accommodations at the Dev Centre to coordinated support services and friendly faces across the city, Cornwall is proving once again that our sense of community runs deep. 💛

Let’s continue to keep our new neighbours in our thoughts and extend a warm welcome wherever we can. More updates to come as this important effort continues.
