MEET YOUR NEIGHBOUR
👋 Debbie Keillar Steps Up for SDG’s Shell-tering Heroes

Debbie Keillar of the SDG Turtles
If you’ve been reading the Scoop for a while, you’ll remember our feature on SDG Turtles and their incredible team of “turtle taxi” volunteers - everyday heroes who help transport injured turtles to safety and medical care.
Well, this week, we’re sending a big round of applause to Debbie Keillar, one of those very volunteers, who jumped into action to give a turtle a second chance at life. Debbie received a call and quickly hit the road to pick up the injured turtle in Monkland, then drove him to Kemptville to meet another volunteer who continued the journey to the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre in Perth.
This kind of teamwork - between responders, volunteers, and drivers — is what makes the turtle taxi network so special. Every ride matters. Every mile makes a difference. And Debbie’s effort is a shining example of how one person (and one carefully driven car ride!) can make a big impact on local wildlife conservation.
🐢 Thank you, Debbie, for giving that turtle a fighting chance and for being part of a small but mighty force keeping our shelled neighbours safe!

WHERE TO GRAB A BITE
🍽️ Reader Recipe Edition!
A reader’s recipe!
This week, we’re handing over the spatula to one of our readers — thanks to Chris for sending in this irresistible potato dish that’s equal parts crispy, tangy, and comforting: Smooshed & Crispy Potatoes with Salt ’n’ Vinegar Sour Cream.
Perfect as a sidekick to anything off the BBQ or your go-to “I forgot I need to bring something to the dinner party” dish, this recipe is all about golden edges and that mouth-watering salt ’n’ vinegar zing. Just boil your baby Yukons until fork-tender, give them a satisfying smash, roast until crispy, and drizzle with olive oil and vinegar. Serve over a puddle of tangy sour cream and top with a few cranks of black pepper. That’s it — simple, crowd-pleasing, and totally addictive. 🥔💥
We love shining a light on what you’re cooking up at home, so if you’ve got a favourite family recipe, something seasonal, or even just your weekday dinner MVP - send it our way!
📧 Email us at [email protected]
🖼️ Bonus points for a photo (and an extra thumbs up if you’re in it!)
📚 We’ll feature your dish in an upcoming issue of the Scoop!
Let’s keep those local flavours coming - we can’t wait to see what’s next from your kitchens!
THROWBACK CORNER
📸 Four Wheels, Two Rails, One River

Take a look at this rare gem from the 1950s - a snapshot that captures four different modes of transportation all in one frame, right here in Cornwall.
Snapped on Water Street near the old canal, this photo features:
🚍 A Cornwall Street Railway bus
🚂 An electric locomotive
🚗 A few classic cars cruising along
🚢 And the massive "Bayfair" ship docked just steps away
Shared by Allan Benton, this image is a beautiful reminder of the city’s bustling industrial and transportation hub days — where rail, road, and water all met.
Thanks to Allan for sharing this time capsule with us!

PET OF THE WEEK
🦅 A Near Miss in the Wild

Can you spot the squirrel? Photograph by Mark Day
Okay, we admit it - this week’s “pet” isn’t exactly one you’d keep in your backyard… but it’s a wild moment too good not to share.
Local nature photographer Mark Day was in the right place at the right time to capture this dramatic encounter: a hawk (or falcon — we’re open to expert guesses!) swooping in on a squirrel mid-tree scramble. Just as things were looking dicey, the squirrel ducked into its hollow in the trunk — escaping with milliseconds to spare.
The photo is equal parts beautiful and heart-pounding - a reminder of just how thrilling life in the wild can be, even in our own backyard.
📸 Thanks once again to Mark Day for his incredible eye and for sharing yet another unforgettable wildlife moment from SD&G!
Have a favourite pet or wild critter photo to share? Send it in — we’d love to feature it next week!
COMMUNITY WINS
🏆 Mullets for a Mission – Oxford Students Raise Nearly $7K for Cancer Support

No more mullets!
A group of big-hearted students at Oxford on Rideau Public School recently proved that a good haircut can go a long way - especially when it's for a cause.
Led by Cole DeVries and Hunter Wilson, the boys spent over a year growing out mullets as part of their “Mullet Mas-a-Cure” campaign, raising money in honour of a friend undergoing cancer treatment. They even recruited their pals to join the fun, and by March, the group had collected sponsorships from family, friends, and neighbours.
At a head-shaving event on March 29th, the mullets came off and the donations rolled in - $6,970 in total! Proceeds were shared between the WDMH Foundation and two cancer-related charities.
A+ work, boys. You made the community proud, and we’re sure those toques fit a little better now too. 😉👏
