SD&G Scoop – Your Local Lowdown for November 20-27, 2025!

Holiday Happenings, Community Alerts & One Big Thank You

Hey there, Cornwall & SD&G crew! 👋

Welcome back to another cozy, community-filled edition of The Scoop and wow, do we ever have a lot to cover this week!

First, a big thank you (and a sincere oops!) to Arnold for pointing out that we missed featuring last week’s Christmas Parade. With so many amazing events happening, it slipped through the cracks but we always appreciate when our readers keep us on track. Thanks, Arnold! 🙌

Speaking of listening to our readers, the results from last week’s survey are in… and 80% of you are homeowners!
Suddenly your collective obsession with the Real Estate & Neighbourhood Buzz section makes perfect sense. Don’t worry, we’ll keep bringing you beautiful listings and local gems, and we’ll also sprinkle in the occasional rental listing so everyone stays in the loop.

A little heads-up: next week may be our final Scoop of the year, as we’ll be taking some time off in December to recharge, enjoy the season, and maybe sneak in a few gingerbread cookies. 😉
So if there’s an event you’d love us to feature before we wrap up 2025, now’s the time to send it our way!

And finally - a quick but important community alert. 🚨
One of our readers made us aware of a Special Olympics fundraising scam happening in the region. Folks are going door-to-door pretending to collect donations, which the Special Olympics organization would not do. Please be cautious, double-check credentials when donating, and when in doubt, contact the organization directly. Huge thanks to the reader who flagged this - you may have helped protect someone! 💛

Alright, grab a warm drink and settle in - let’s dive into what’s happening this week across SD&G!

THROWBACK CORNER
📸 The Longue Sault Rapids

Nathan Gowsell shared this photo.

Here’s a gorgeous piece of local history to rewind the clock: the Longue Sault Rapids - once one of the most dramatic and powerful stretches of the St. Lawrence River. And yes… Longue Sault, with the original French spelling! A neat little detail you don’t often see anymore.

This old photo is a striking reminder of what the river once looked like before major changes reshaped our shoreline. Today, the rapids are long gone, leaving many locals wondering what it must’ve felt like to stand on the riverbank and hear that roaring water rushing by. 🌊

So here’s a question for all you history buffs and lifelong locals:
👉 Why don’t we have these rapids anymore?
Is it because of the construction of the Cornwall Dam and the St. Lawrence Seaway flooding?

Hit reply and tell us what you know, or what you remember. We love hearing stories passed down through families, and we’re sure plenty of you have a tale or two about this incredible part of SD&G’s past.

PET OF THE WEEK
🐾 A Gentle Reminder for Pet Parents

As we head into the colder months here in SD&G, we want to offer a warm (and important!) reminder to all our readers: please don’t leave your pets outside for extended periods in the winter weather.

We’ve unfortunately been seeing more stories lately about dogs being left outdoors in freezing temperatures, and it breaks our hearts. 💔 Our furry friends feel the cold just like we do - sometimes even more and they rely on us to keep them safe, warm, and cared for.

So as the snow starts to fall and those chilly winds pick up, please:
❄️ Bring pets inside when temperatures drop
❄️ Limit outdoor time to short, supervised play sessions
❄️ Make sure they have a warm, dry place to rest
❄️ Check on neighbours or friends who may need help keeping their pets safe

A little extra care goes a long way to keeping tails wagging all winter long. ❤️ If you ever see an animal in distress, please contact your local authorities or OSPCA.

Stay warm, stay kind, and give your pets a cozy snuggle from us!

COMMUNITY WINS
🏆 Cornwall’s New Bird-Friendly Bus Shelter!

Courtesy of City of Cornwall

If you’ve recently driven down Angelo Lebano Drive and found yourself squinting at the new bus shelter wondering, “Hmm… what’s with the dotted design?” - you’re not alone. We were curious too!

Turns out, it’s not just a design choice - it’s a brilliant, eco-friendly upgrade by Cornwall Transit as part of a new pilot project supporting the City’s environmental initiatives. 🌿🐦

The wrap is bird-friendly, designed to help reduce dangerous window collisions and promote local biodiversity. Small upgrades like this may seem simple, but they make a huge difference for the thousands of birds that pass through Cornwall’s green spaces and waterways.

This shelter is just one piece of a growing list of environmental improvements, alongside bird-safe window tape and eco-conscious updates to municipal infrastructure - all part of the city’s goal to earn Bird-Friendly City certification through Nature Canada.

A big round of applause 👏 to Cornwall Transit, City Council, and every resident who continues to support a more sustainable, wildlife-friendly community. And honestly? It’s great to see a cost-effective initiative that makes a real, measurable impact on the environment.

Sometimes small dots add up to big wins. 🌎

JUST FOR FUN
🎯 Games Corner – Just for Fun!

A lovely reader wrote in saying, “Hey Scoop, can we get more Glengarry content?”
Well… challenge accepted! While this isn’t exactly breaking news, it’s a fantastic slice of Glengarry history and a perfect fit for this week’s trivia. 😉

Here’s your question:
Glengarry County was originally settled in 1792 by Scottish emigrants fleeing which major historical event?

A) The Potato Famine
B) The Highland Games
C) The Highland Clearances
D) A clan disagreement about who makes the best bannock

Take your guess before scrolling…

👇
👇
👇

✔️ Answer: C) The Highland Clearances!

Many families from the Scottish Highlands, especially from Inverness-shire, arrived in Glengarry during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Their culture, traditions, and even Scottish Gaelic remained a vibrant part of the area for generations - with the language spoken locally for over 400 years.

Pretty amazing, right?

And to the reader who asked for more Glengarry coverage - we hear you! We’ll keep sprinkling more stories, facts, and features from that historic corner of SD&G. Keep the requests coming! 😊

ESTATE & NEIGHBOURHOOD BUZZ
🏡 A Cornwall Classic on Second Street East

📍 425 Second St E, Cornwall
💰 $940,000 | 🛏️ 4 Bedrooms | 🛁 3 Bathrooms | 🔥 4 Fireplaces | 📐 Approx. 3,000 sq. ft.

If you love homes with charm, character, and history… buckle up, because this one is an absolute treat.
425 Second Street East is easily one of our favourite homes in all of SD&G, and the newly listed interior photos are every bit as stunning as you’d hope. Think warm woodwork, timeless craftsmanship, and jaw-dropping custom details you rarely see in modern builds.

Originally constructed by a local doctor on a sprawling 100’ x 264’ lot, this home offers approximately 3,000 sq. ft. of living space, complete with:
 Four fireplaces (yes, four!)
Gorgeous original woodwork
A detached oversized 1.5-storey garage/workshop
Flexible zoning that allows for a home office, in-law suite, or creative mixed-use option
A stone exterior and updated roof with an everlasting metal finish

Inside, the floor plan feels both grand and cozy - large rooms, elegant built-ins, and the kind of thoughtful custom features that simply aren’t made anymore. The home has been lovingly maintained, preserving the craftsmanship of its era while blending in tasteful modern upgrades.

Whether you’re house-hunting or simply love browsing beautiful homes (we totally get it!), this one is worth a peek. The listing photos alone are a joy - every room tells a story. 📸✨

If you’ve driven by this home and wondered what it looks like inside… now’s your chance, and trust us, it doesn’t disappoint!
