SD&G Scoop – Your Local Lowdown for November 6-13, 2025!
From Perks to Pups: All the local good news this week in SDG!
Hey there, Cornwall & SD&G crew! 👋
We’ve been busy behind the scenes, and we’re thrilled to share an update on The SDG Perks Pass - our upcoming discount and perks card that celebrates local shopping across SDG! 🎉 Over 20 local businesses have already been contacted (many of them ones you mentioned on Facebook — thank you!). Keep those suggestions coming - just reply to this email with your favourite local spots, and we’ll be sure to reach out to them next.
And while we’re on the topic of local businesses… we’re curious 👀 - do any business owners read The Scoop? If so, we’d love to hear from you!
Are you... |
A quick oops moment from us too 🙈 - in last week’s newsletter, we accidentally mixed up the details on the Out of Nowhere VR experience. It was actually created by an incredibly talented filmmaker based in Europe, and you can learn more about her at krishofmann.co.uk.
Lastly, a big warm welcome to our new readers from the Glengarry Walking Club! Thanks for joining The Scoop family - we’re so glad to have you along for the stroll!

Thanks for the support, friends!
THROWBACK CORNER
📸 Remembering the Ice Storm of ’98

While The Scoop loves to celebrate the bright and cheerful side of SDG, some moments from our past—though difficult—remind us just how strong and resilient our community truly is.
Back in January 1998, Eastern Ontario was hit by one of the worst ice storms in Canadian history. St. Albert and surrounding areas were blanketed in thick layers of ice that devastated farms, crippled power lines, and tested the endurance of families and farmers alike.
One haunting image from that time shows Ginette Hebert, walking past dairy cattle lost during the blackout - a heartbreaking reminder of how deeply the storm impacted rural life. Yet, through all the hardship, neighbours came together to support one another, sharing generators, food, and warmth when it mattered most.
As one local put it best: “It wasn’t the best of times, but people did their best.” ❤️
It’s moments like these that define who we are in SDG…resilient, compassionate, and always ready to lend a hand.

COMMUNITY WINS
🏆 A Million-Dollar Boost for Cornwall’s New Arts Centre!
Big news for Cornwall’s arts and culture scene! Former resident Barbara Stewart Etherington and her husband Bill Etherington have pledged an incredible $1 million donation toward the city’s new Arts Centre, on top of a previous $100,000 gift. This generous contribution, announced at the Cornwall Arts Hall of Fame Gala, brings the dream of a vibrant downtown cultural hub even closer to reality.
Barbara, whose deep family roots in Cornwall span generations, shared that her inspiration came from cherished local friendships and countless fond memories spent in theatres and arts centres with her sisters. Her family’s legacy includes teachers, judges, and even Cornwall’s former City Coroner - all with strong ties to the community.
Mayor Justin Towndale expressed heartfelt gratitude, noting how this donation “significantly enhances the arts and culture of our community and ensures that future generations will have access to these resources.”
With this gift, the new Arts Centre - located in the former Bank of Montreal building - is set to become a lively hub for creativity, performance, and community connection. 🎨✨

JUST FOR FUN
🎯 Games Corner – Just for Fun!
Here’s a bright piece of local trivia for you - Cornwall holds a shocking place in Canadian history! 🔌
Back in April 1883, the Weave Shed at the Canada Mill became the first factory in Canada to use Thomas Edison’s incandescent electric lights. That’s right, our city helped light the way for industrial innovation across the country!
Even cooler? Edison himself traveled to Cornwall to oversee the installation and famously flipped the switch, plunging the factory into darkness before illuminating it with his brand-new electric bulbs. Imagine the awe on everyone’s faces that night!
So next time you flip a light switch, give a little nod to Cornwall - where Canada’s electric story began. 💡
ESTATE & NEIGHBOURHOOD BUZZ
🏡 Cozy Corner Charm on Bousquet Ave

If you’ve been eyeing Cornwall’s housing market but the recent listings have felt a bit out of reach, this one might just brighten your day! Priced at $285,000, 476 Bousquet Avenue is a cozy, move-in-ready bungalow that proves affordability and charm can absolutely go hand-in-hand.
Tucked on a corner lot in central Cornwall, this home offers 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and a finished lower level — giving you flexibility for guests, hobbies, or that home office you’ve been dreaming about. The detached garage adds extra convenience (and storage!), while the fenced-in backyard is perfect for relaxing, gardening, or letting the pup roam freely.
With a mid-century interior full of character and close proximity to shopping, restaurants, and the 401, this property strikes the perfect balance of comfort, location, and value.
