So Much Happening in SD&G: Laughs, Music, Markets & More!

Hey there, Cornwall & SD&G crew! 👋

We’ve got another busy week of events to keep you laughing, dancing, and exploring - from comedy nights and car shows to live music and markets, there’s truly something for everyone. 🎶🍎🚗

But first, a quick community heads-up: a 100-acre forest fire is currently burning out of control at the Alvin Runnals Forest in North Dundas. 🚨 Emergency crews are on the scene, and while there’s no need for alarm in surrounding areas, residents of North Stormont may notice smoke or the smell of smoke over the next little while. Our thanks go out to the firefighters, police, and emergency management officials working hard to contain the blaze.

Now, onto brighter news, here’s what’s happening this week across Cornwall & SDG:

  • 😂 Laugh out loud at Comedy Open Mic @ Carrots N’ Dates

  • ♠️ Shuffle up for Euchre Night in Avonmore

  • 🎶 Travel back in time with Sixth & Broadway: Celebrate the ’60s

  • 🚗 Rev your engines at the Jail Break Car Show

  • 🌾 Stroll through the Williamsburg Country Market

  • 💃 Dance the night away at Harvestfest in Williamsburg

  • 🎻 Soak up Celtic vibes with Vandalia at Stone Crop Acres

Grab your calendar, rally your friends, and let’s make this week one to remember!

PS there are A LOT of events going on this week!

MEET YOUR NEIGHBOUR
👋 Pumpkins, Creativity & Community Pride: Meet Margi

This week, we’re shining the spotlight on a local talent who’s about to hit national TV screens - Margi McInnis Laurin! 🎃✨

Margi, a self-taught and incredibly skilled pumpkin artist, is competing on season 15 of Food Network’s Halloween Wars for a chance to win $25,000. The new season premiered September 21, and you can catch episodes Sundays at 9 PM (or stream the next day on Discovery+).

With her creativity, precision, and passion for the craft, Margi is putting her skills to the ultimate test in front of millions of viewers. In fact, last year’s season drew more than 11.9 million fans so you can bet there will be plenty of people cheering her on, and we’re extra proud to know she’s representing our community on such a big stage. 🙌

👉 Be sure to tune in and support Margi as she carves her way through the competition. And if you see her around town, give her a big congrats - it’s not every day we get to celebrate a neighbour competing on national television!

WHERE TO GRAB A BITE
🍬 Bright Side Candy Co. – A Sweet New Local Venture

This week, we’re shining a spotlight on a brand-new (and seriously sweet!) addition to our community: Bright Side Candy Co., started by local youth entrepreneur Aiden. 🎉

At such a young age, Aiden has officially launched his own candy business and you can find him every Sunday at the Cornwall Kinsmen Farmers’ Market (10 AM – 2 PM in the St. Lawrence College parking lot). With a big smile and bags of colourful candy, he’s already winning hearts and creating quite the buzz.

Starting a business is no small feat, and we think it’s pretty amazing to see one of our youngest locals take the leap into entrepreneurship. So next time you’re at the market, swing by his table, grab a treat (or two 😉), and show him some support as he grows Bright Side Candy Co. into something even bigger.

👉 Supporting Aiden doesn’t just mean satisfying your sweet tooth - it means investing in the bright future of one of our own. Let’s help spread the word and keep this sweet dream rolling!

THROWBACK CORNER
📸 Domtar & the Old Seaway Bridge (1966)

Photograph posted by Allan Benton

This week’s throwback takes us back to 1966, when Cornwall’s skyline looked a whole lot different! Pictured here is the Domtar Pulp & Paper mill (Howard Smith Division) in full swing, with the old Seaway International Bridge stretching across the river.

For decades, Domtar was a cornerstone of Cornwall’s industrial boom, providing jobs for generations of families and shaping the city’s identity as a hardworking mill town. You can practically hear the hum of the machines and see the plumes of steam rising as this bustling site kept the city moving. And of course, that old bridge was more than just a crossing - it was a gateway for travel, trade, and plenty of weekend adventures to and from the U.S.

It’s a snapshot of an era when industry was king, and Cornwall was buzzing with activity along the waterfront. While much has changed since then, photos like this remind us of the city’s deep roots in industry, resilience, and community spirit.

👉 Do you or your family have memories of working at Domtar, or crossing the old bridge back in the day? Share your stories with us - we’d love to feature them in a future Scoop!

PET OF THE WEEK
🐶 Help Find Her Home

Hoping she finds a caring home

This sweet girl is looking for her way back home. 💔 She was recently picked up on 4th Road in Avonmore and is currently in the care of the Township of North Stormont.

If you recognize her, or if you know someone who might be missing their furry friend, please reach out to the township during regular business hours at 613-443-3066 for more information on how to bring her home.

Let’s help spread the word, neighbours - every share, every mention helps reunite lost pets with their families. 🐶❤️

JUST FOR FUN
🎯 Games Corner – Garlic Galore! 🧄

We may have missed giving a shoutout to the Eastern Ontario Garlic Festival last week (sorry, garlic lovers!), but we couldn’t let it pass without a little love in this week’s Scoop. After all, SDG is known as one of Ontario’s top garlic-growing regions - our soil is perfect for cool-season crops like hardneck garlic.

Some of the superstar varieties grown here include:

  • Rocambole – rich flavour, easy to peel

  • Purple Stripe – beautiful bulbs with a spicy kick

  • Porcelain – hardy, large cloves with a strong punch

Pretty impressive, right?

ESTATE & NEIGHBOURHOOD BUZZ
🏡 A Stone Beauty in South Glengarry

We’re absolute suckers for old stone houses (and let’s be honest, who isn’t?), especially when they come with a tree-lined driveway that looks straight out of a storybook. This 1868 stone home in South Glengarry checks all the boxes and then some - set on an expansive 51-acre property, it’s brimming with history, character, and country charm.

Picture this: a stately maple-lined lane guiding you to manicured grounds, with the rest of the property offering bush, woodland, and plenty of farmland. Inside, you’ll find a cozy country kitchen, a massive living room perfect for family gatherings, and an oversized mudroom that’s both practical and inviting. Upstairs are four comfortable bedrooms and a full family bath, making it a true retreat for those who crave space and tranquility.

And let’s not forget the extras - a traditional barn with workshop space, box stalls, vehicle storage, and even a charming playhouse for the kids. Add in a cement slab silo, grain bin, and a huge wood shed, and this place is just as practical as it is beautiful.

At $1,250,000, it’s a rare blend of bygone elegance and modern comfort - the perfect country escape just outside the city. 🌳
